Life After Braces - Retainers

After your braces are removed retainers are used to keep the teeth in the new position and maintain the beautiful
smile we have achieved. The teeth are likely to move out of alignment if retainers are not used.
The lower retainer most frequently used is a formed wire attached to the back of the lower front teeth.
The upper retainer is usually a removable retainer which, after six months of full time wear, is worn
when sleeping only.

The overall time retainers are needed varies depending on the original problem and the growth potential
remaining in the jaws. They are usually used for at least two years and may be continued beyond that at the
discretion of the patient and the doctor if we are concerned with possible tooth movement in the future.
The retainers are checked and adjusted as needed every three to four months for approximately two years. After that,
additional appointments are scheduled if deemed necessary on a yearly basis.
